16th Annual International Conference on Clinical Ethics & Consultation,
31 March - 3 April 2020,
The Centre for Medical Ethics and Law in the Department of Medicine at the Faculty of Health Sciences, Stellenbosch University is delighted to host the 16th Annual ICCEC Conference in April 2020 at the Spier Conference Centre in Stellenbosch, Cape Town, South Africa.
This prestigious international conference has been hosted at various academic venues around the globe for the past 14 years, Co- founded by Prof George Agich from the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio (currently based in Austin, Texas, USA) and Prof Stella Reiter Theil (Universitas Hospital in Basel, Switzerland.
As you can imagine, the ICCEC 2020 will be a very special event as it will be the first time that the ICCEC will be hosted in Africa. Given that the conference will explore important ethical and legal conflicts that arise in healthcare, it is also extremely timely given the high incidence of medical litigation in South Africa currently. The overarching conference theme is “Beyond borders: exploring new frontiers”. The subthemes include the following controversial and topical issues:
Diversity in philosophical approaches that guide decision-making in clinical ethics
End of Life conflicts and cultural complexity
Origins and migration
Clinical ethics, the Law and Society
New technologies (digital health and AI) and its impact on healthcare and clinical ethics
We hope that the conference will raise awareness of the importance of establishing Clinical Ethics Committees (CECs) in hospitals throughout South Africa and on the African continent and that this, in turn, will reduce the unprecedented incidence and high costs of medical litigation in our country. The conference will be of interest to healthcare practitioners, bioethicists, lawyers, healthcare funders and policy makers in the public and private health sectors. We also hope to build capacity in clinical ethics and stimulate empirical research in the field. We anticipate that approximately 500 delegates will attend. We are marketing the event to our large networks of graduates in Africa and abroad. The conference will end with a meeting of the WHO Network of Collaborating Centres in Bioethics. We kindly request if you would consider a mutual collaboration by assisting us in promoting the 16th Annual International Conference on Clinical Ethics & Consultation on any platforms you have available.
I am happy to offer your organization exposure on all of our relevant platforms and I look forward to hearing from you and to the possibility of a mutual collaboration.
